Stuck For Photography Career Ideas Here’s 5…

Recently I was out and about with a friend who’s just completed an evening course in digital photography. He really does have the eye for a good shot and manages to always come up with original composures. However he had no idea how turn his talent into a career. He doesn’t want to do commercial photography regarding products etc, and that was as far as his thoughts went…How can someone so creative be, at the same time, so lacking in ideas?! So I thought I’d come up with a few options for him:

Portrait, Family & Baby Photography

Some photographers naturally find that they are betting at working with people. This can extend to either full on formal portraits or more candid shots. There is a great call for this style of photography today, but you have to be well rounded and able to produce a number of styles.

Many people still want the formal portrait photography, either single of family shots. While this doesn’t essentially lend itself to great creativity, this style will be more a test of your technical knowledge and people will expect a very high quality portrait.

However, more and more younger couples and families are enjoying the more candid ‘action’ portraits. This is where the photographer gets to be more creative and will set up a few scenarios while letting the family naturally engage with each other. While you don’t always get the ‘face first’ photograph, you often capture a more intimate feel of the subject.

Nature Photography

Many freelance photographers enjoy nature photography, whether just for personal interest or for any paid work. However nature photography isn’t just a ‘turn up and shoot’ option. To be successful you really should be passionate about this and the subject; patience is just as important as talent when dealing with nature photography.

Thorough research is essential. You must know your subject, where to find it? The best times to find it? How to approach? What equipment is needed? Don’t always expect to get the results you want from one sitting.

Build up your portfolio and submit your images to nature magazines or production companies and see where it could take you.

Travel Photography

Another one for the freelancer (unless you are very lucky and manage to affiliate yourself with travel / TV production companies) who wants to combine personal passions with work.

To stand out in this field you really need to be able to look at things in a way that others don’t. You may be taking shots of a landscape or monument that many have seen before, but can you make it seem new or original?

It’s not just packing up your camera and jumping on a plane however. Again, research is paramount. Learn the rules of the country and areas you want to photograph (not everyone welcomes a happy snapper). Try and visit areas that have relevance to world affairs. It’s not just about recording your journey; it’s making emotive reactions with people who may never have visited the area before.

Architectural Photography

For many city dwellers, the surrounding architecture and urban scenes are their landscapes and the recording of them is not only for commercial reasons but also for cultural recording.

There are many opportunities nowadays for an architectural photographer. Real Estate is of course a large industry to tap into; interior and exterior shots of building and residences and also their surrounding areas. You could also try architectural services and publications – going for structural shots, interiors and exteriors as well as works in progress. Proving yourself reliable and capable in this field could generate lots of repeat work.

There are also of course niches within this field – Historical publications, Religious publications (churches etc), Travel Publications etc.

Wedding Photography

Last but not least is one of the largest options for a professional photographer – wedding photography.

This is becoming less and less of a seasonal occupation now, with couples choosing more varied times of year for their nuptials. This means that you must be adaptable to light and weather conditions, while having the main skills of group and couple shots, being able to communicate with families without being an ‘intruder’ to the day.

The best wedding photographers are those whom you don’t realise are there all day. Often it’s a 2 man job nowadays, to get the mix of staged shots and candid shots. Versatility is also key, can you offer modern styles? Contemporary? Classical and traditional? You will find most couples have a definite idea of what they want.

Of course there are many other paths a photographer can go down, from sports and adventure work, newspaper photo-journalism to glamour work. Have a think about the subjects and styles you most enjoy and then see were this could take you. Be creative in your approach to who may want your pictures and never, never give up!

Photography Analysis Of Orange County Wedding Photography Location Marbella Country Club

Next to the photographer, the wedding location is the most important factor for obtaining an excellent wedding photography collection. Marbella Country Club, located in Orange County’s San Juan Capistrano, if shot correctly can produce unique and memorable wedding shots.

At the entrance of the Country Club there is a sign with the locations name. A photographer should take a picture of the sign for the event he will later wish to use the shot as an opening page of a wedding album. The picture of a sign introduces the album viewer to the wedding location and is a logical way to begin.

In the reception area, there is a rounded double directional stairwell. This is an excellent spot to take group pictures. The large stairwell has a stately look to it and it can fit 40 or 50 people. The stairs are nicely spaced by length and height so that the subjects are usually not blocking each other when they line up. The photographer should, however, get close enough so that only the stairwell is in view. Often there are a number of people eating or walking on the plaza above the stairwell. These persons will create a distraction if they are captured in the shot.

The actual ceremony takes place on a large grassy area. While there is some shade, it is limited. The photographer should plan on many of the shots that cover the entire wedding ceremony party to be in direct sunlight – which is often not conducive to flattering lighting. He should plan on taking small groups aside and shooting them in the shade. Because of the relative lack of shade, the time of day of the wedding will have a profound impact on the quality of wedding portraits obtained.

The indoor reception areas does not have a lot of windows; hence, natural lighting is difficult to come by. The party should get all of the natural lighting shots they desire outside before heading inside for the reception.

The Marbella Country Club in Orange County California is a beautiful location with much photojournalistic potential. The lush green grass and shrubs, Mediterranean style, and beautiful indoor decor provide some great raw materials for a photographer to exploit in the pursuit of a fantastic wedding photography collection.

Commercial Industrial Photography

A very popular and common commercial photography assignment under taken by the professional photographers is wedding photography. Generally, this involves covering just the wedding day but other important rituals and functions preceding the wedding day.

In the pre-digital days, it was a daunting task to undertake a photography assignment. The limitations of olden camera equipment, heavy lenses and the fact that there was no room for error, led only the real photographers doing the best of the jobs. With advent of digital photography, the dynamics of the entire commercial photography underwent a paradigm shift.

The entire lineage of old studios with dark rooms, chemicals and staff were replaced with the digital darkroom software like Adobe Photo Shop, Apple Aperture etc. While these two remain the most popular editing software, there are plethoras of free editing software available online that many of the amateurs prefer due to the daunting costs of commercial editing software and flexibility to experiment and learn with minimum / least cost.

A commercial photographer today is equipped with: digital camera typically above 18 Mega Pixels, dedicated external strobe flash, light weight tripod, memory cards and sometime external flood lights. The most expensive set of equipment is generally not the camera, but the range of lenses required to cover an event or complete commercial assignments that require a wide range of subjects to be covered. The best example being, the industrial photography assignments in which the photographer is expected to capture the top-management photo-shoots as well as the industrial processes which may involve the making of parts, melting of steel, foundry photography.

Commercial photography, although challenging may not be that well paying, as many of the clients fail to understand the efforts involved in the actual photo-shoot followed by hours of post-product and editing done on the images to make them appealing to the target audience. The most common usage of the commercial images is magazine, brochure, product catalogues and the clients web site and presentations.

For each of the final platforms on which the photograph is going to be delivered the editing and post-processing requirement changes variedly. For example, if the final output platform is going to be website of the client there is no need of working on the print quality images, resized images which cover the entire project will suffice.

Commercial photography offers many practical and logistical challenges for the photographers. The industrial photographers are required to know the location, time and have to study the various angles at which the photograph can be captured. Sometimes, on location photography may be done in the night, when there is lot of external artificial lighting setup for giving the optimum effect.
